Lawyers also factor in how complicated your case is and the amount of time it will take. Even though the trial itself may only take half-a-day, researching the law, finding and interviewing witnesses, as well as preparing documents and arguments for the trial can take days, weeks or even longer. Sometimes unexpected developments take place that make your case even more complicated, which could result in higher fees.

Good lawyers are also active in their community. Ask the lawyer and do some research to see if the lawyer is involved in the community and the extent of that involvement.

Every state has its own set of real estate laws. For the most part, a real estate agent's help is not legally required, though agents can help you with tasks that border on legal ones, such as preparing a home purchase contract. In some states, however, only a lawyer is allowed to prepare the home purchase documents, perform a title search, and close the deal.

The Purchase and Sales is the most important document in the transaction and will contain terms and conditions that you must be aware of and be in compliance with. Review and advise on the mortgage and finance commitment. Points, commitment, service charges, prepayment penalties and a host of other factors should be reviewed.

Family law matters often require you to spend several hours working with your chosen attorney. If the lawyer is known for being a Pit-bull in the courtroom, but his aggressive demeanor is off-putting you might find it difficult to work with him on a long-term basis. Lawyers often enlist help from paralegals to minimize legal fees, so when possible ask to consult with all team members who will be representing your case.
